7 dead as Indian police fire on activists

NEW DELHI, May 13 (UPI) -- Police in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh killed six opposition party members Friday, resulting in riots and the death of a police officer.

Thirty-eight people were also hurt in the violence that erupted as candidates filed nominations for a by-election to the Penukonda assembly cin Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district, the semi-official Press Trust of India reported.

The election, to be held June 2, became necessary when the previous lawmaker from the constituency, a member of the opposition Telugu Desam Party, was killed Jan. 26 by unidentified gunmen.

TDP members began pelting police with stones Friday when their candidate arrived to file her nomination papers. Police opened fire, killing four party activists. Two others were killed in the ensuing stampede. A police inspector who was struck by a stone died at a local hospital, police said.

PTI quoted official sources as saying a magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the incident.
