Cuban slams Chile over dissident

SANTIAGO, Chile, May 12 (UPI) -- Cuban President Fidel Castro has criticized Chile for not pressuring the United States to turn over a Cuban dissident.

Castro says Chilean President Ricardo Lagos should take advantage of his close ties with the United States to petition the Bush administration to turn over Luis Posada Carriles, who has been implicated in an assassination attempt on the Cuban leader.

He also criticized the secretary-general of the Organization for American State, Jose Miguel Insulza, for not taking the initiative to demand Carriles' extradition from the United States, La Tercera newspaper reported Thursday.

Insulza was Chile's interior minister before assuming the OAS leadership last month.

Carriles, 77, was arrested in Panama in 2000 for plotting to assassinate Castro during a summit there.

Earlier this week declassified U.S. government files revealed Carriles was an informant for the United States in the 1960s and 1970s.

He is currently seeking political asylum in Miami.
