Runaway bride enters treatment center

GAINESVILLE, Ga., May 10 (UPI) -- Jennifer Wilbanks, the Georgia woman who fled to New Mexico just before her wedding, has admitted herself to a medical treatment center.

A statement released by her family's church in Gainesville, Ga., said she entered the facility Monday "to address physical and mental issues which, she believes, played a major role in her running from herself."

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Tuesday the specific treatment center was not identified.

The statement called it a "highly regarded in-patient treatment program. Updates on her condition will be announced at a later time, as approved by medical personnel and her attorney."

Wilbanks' attorney had said Monday the woman wants to help the community of Duluth, Ga., where she was living with her fiancé, to recoup the $43,000 it spent on the search for her.

Mayor Shirley Lasseter said a combination of restitution and community service might be appropriate.

Wilbanks, 32, disappeared April 26 and wound up in Albuquerque, N.M., where she called authorities, falsely telling them she had been abducted.
