Hamas: postponing elections 'rejected'

GAZA, May 10 (UPI) -- An Islamic Hamas flier distributed Tuesday rejected U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's proposal to postpone the Palestinian elections.

Rice Monday suggested postponing the legislative elections -- tentatively set for July 17 -- until the Palestinian Authority finalizes reforms within its system.

The Hamas leaflet accused the United States of singling out the Palestinians for delayed democracy.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon Monday postponed Israel's pullout from Palestinian territories until Aug. 15. The unilateral plan was supposed to be implemented by July 25.

Israel, the United States and the PA are concerned over the latest results of the municipal elections where Hamas gained a higher percentage than had been expected.
