Mass. Dems to vote on same-sex endorsement

LOWELL, Mass., May 4 (UPI) -- The Massachusetts Democratic Party is considering endorsing gay marriage in its official party platform, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

State Democratic Party Chairman Philip Johnston said the party will discuss the proposed platform change May 14, three days before the one-year anniversary of same-sex marriage's legalization in the state.

The 3,000 state party delegates meet May 14 at the Paul E. Tsongas Arena in Lowell.

"I don't anticipate any serious debate about it," Johnston said. "I think most delegates will support it. In this state, the more people get used to the idea, the more support there is."

The proposed addition states: "We affirm our commitment to the Massachusetts constitutional guarantee to same-sex marriage and all of its rights, privileges, and obligations, and reject any attempt to weaken or revoke those rights."

State Democratic parties in Iowa and Colorado added similar endorsements of same-sex marriage to their platforms last year.
