Mother, daughter slain, brother abandoned

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., April 25 (UPI) -- A Grand Rapids, Mich., family is grieving the deaths of an 8-year-old girl and her 27-year-old mother found slain in their home.

Melissa Friar's 4-year-old son, Jonathon, was found, unharmed, four miles away, where police believe he had been dropped off hours earlier in the cold, the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Press reported Monday.

Police investigators said they were not sure if the slayings have anything to do with an order of protection taken out by Friar in October against a man she said broke into her home. In February, Friar asked the judge to dismiss the protection order.

Police received a report a boy not wearing a coat had been abandoned in freezing conditions. The boy told police his mother and half-sister were hurt and directed police to his home.

"This is a real, real sharp kid," said Sgt. Terry McGee. "He was able to lead us from way on the south end back to the north end."

Police have not provided further details on how the victims were killed, or who may have taken the boy to another part of town.
