Ecuador's ex-leader arrives in Brasilia

BRASILIA, Brazil, April 25 (UPI) -- Deposed Ecuadorian President Lucio Gutierrez has arrived in the Brazilian capital with his wife and daughters to begin a life in exile.

Gutierrez was first flown Sunday in a Brazilian Air Force plane from the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, to the western Brazilian city of Porto Velho before arriving in Brasilia later in the day, O Globo reported Monday.

Brazil offered to take the Gutierrez after the Ecuadorian Congress voted last week to remove him from power amid widespread protests. Since his removal from office, he and his family had been staying at the Brazilian embassy in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito.

Ecuador's new government -- led by former Vice-President Alfredo Palacio -- originally advocated the ex-president's arrest amid widespread protests denouncing Gutierrez as corrupt and for his recent firing of Ecuador's Supreme Court.

Gutierrez has complained his removal from office was unconstitutional.

He is expected to petition Brazil's Justice Ministry on Monday for political asylum.
