Indiana to have toughest voter ID law

INDIANAPOLIS, April 13 (UPI) -- Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels says he'll sign a voter ID bill passed that would give Indiana the strictest voter requirements in the nation.

The law, passed along party lines, requires Indiana voters to show a photo ID issued by the federal or state government before their votes could be counted.

The state Senate passed the measure 33-17 and sent it to the governor's desk.

"I said before, I likely would sign it. It reflects the sentiment of the state," Daniels told the Indianapolis Star.

The measure would go into effect July 1, ahead of the state's primary election in May 2006.

Voters who show up at the polls without the required ID would be allowed to cast a provisional ballot that would not be counted until they appeared at the county clerk's office with the proper ID by the Monday following the election.

Democrats accused Republicans of trying to suppress voting and the American Civil Liberties Union plans to challenge the constitutionality of the voter ID requirements in court.
