KKK memorabilia auction canceled

MASON, Mich., April 11 (UPI) -- An auction of Ku Klux Klan memorabilia was canceled during the weekend in Mason, Mich., after fliers promoting the KKK were left on doorsteps.

"We found that appalling and disgusting and decided to cancel the auction on the grounds that nothing we do should be a springboard for their recruiting tactics," David Feintuch, owner of the Cobblestone Events Center, told the Ann Arbor (Mich.) News.

He added: "I have nothing against the auctioneer ... he's a legitimate businessman selling pieces of history ... but when the auction is being used as a springboard for their recruitment, that's where I draw the line. Nothing that happens on my property is going to support them."

Feintuch had allowed Ole Gray Nash auctioneer Gary Gray to use his facility after a strong community response to an auction Gray held in Howell, Mich., last January, during which he auctioned several KKK robes for $24,000.

Gray, who auctions items as diverse as glassware and NASCAR memorabilia, received more KKK memorabilia following the auction of the KKK robes.

"There should be very little difference between selling any of this stuff and anything else," Gray said.
