Jailed man freed -- 'murdered' wife alive

BEIJING, April 5 (UPI) -- China has released a man jailed for killing his wife 11 years ago after the woman turned up alive and well, the state-run Xinhua news agency reports.

She Xianglin, 39, a former security guard in central China's Hubei Province was jailed when his wife, Zhang Zaiyu went missing in 1994. About the same time, police found an unidentified female body in a reservoir near She's residence.

With DNA testing not yet available, She was arrested, and reportedly confessed. He was twice sentenced to death, but a higher court commuted his sentence to 15 years.

Now, She claims his confession was rigged.

"The police tortured me by not letting me sleep for 10 days and finally made me leave my fingerprint on the documents when I had almost lost consciousness," he said.

The case has been a major embarrassment for police and prosecutors, the report said.

There was no indication where She's wife had been for the past 11 years, and he said he had no desire to find out.

"I don't want to see her again," he said. "She broke my heart and ruined my life."
