U.S. forces repel attackers, kill five

KABUL, Afghanistan, March 23 (UPI) -- U.S. forces killed five suspected militants in southeast Afghanistan after the guerillas launched an attack on their position, the U.S. military said.

The U.S. base in Khost province came under rocket attack late Tuesday, and the troops called in warplanes to help them fight the attackers, the BBC reported Wednesday.

No U.S. or allied soldiers were hurt in the attack, a U.S. military spokeswoman said, but five of the attackers reportedly were killed when coalition troops returned fire with 150mm artillery rounds.

The U.S.-led coalition has about 18,000 troops in Afghanistan hunting Taliban and al-Qaida militants. Afghan and U.S.-led troops, government officials, aid workers and civilians still come under attack by militants more than three years after the fall of the Taliban regime.
