PORTLAND, Ore., March 12 (UPI) -- Former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski says U.S. foreign policy might foment violent anti-Americanism around the world.
Brzezinski, national security adviser under President Jimmy Carter, was a speaker at this week's World Affairs Council of Oregon's International Speakers Series in Portland. He said the Bush administration's trend of "dictating" to allies could turn the world against the United States.
"We could create the phenomenon of global terrorism that we claim to be fighting," Brzezinski said.
The foreign policy expert described an increasingly complex world that needed the United States to act as a stabilizing force, the Portland Oregonian reported.
"The world needs America strong and powerful, though not necessarily warlike and belligerent," Brzezinski said, quoting a letter from a friend from abroad that he said sums his views.
Brzezinski also blasted the current administration for eschewing bipartisanship to set foreign policy with top advisers who adhere to a narrow dogma "not conducive to the understanding of complex issues."
