Democrats urge Romney to fight Bush budget

BOSTON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Massachusetts' two U.S. senators are trying to get Republican Gov. Mitt Romney to take a stand against President Bush's proposed budget.

The Boston Herald reports that senators Edward Kennedy and John Kerry, both Democrats, urged Romney to fight cuts in block grants to cities and towns.

"This isn't some theoretical ideological argument," Kerry said. "When you have cities like Boston at risk of seeing affordable housing and successful programs for kids just wiped out, we each have a responsibility to lay out the ways in which a draconian budget will hurt people on a personal level."

A Democratic Senate aide said that Kennedy and Kerry believe the budget fight is a test of whether Romney cares more about Massachusetts or a 2008 presidential race.
