Court won't reopen Roe vs. Wade for 'Roe'

WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday refused a request from Norma McCorvey, the "Jane Roe" in Roe vs. Wade, to throw out the landmark 1973 abortion ruling.

In a petition to the high court, McCorvey's lawyers said evidence in the more than three decades since the decision shows the harm done to women by abortion and the lack of proper care at abortion clinics.

McCorvey was 21 when the historic case was filed. At the time, she wanted to abort her third pregnancy, but eventually changed her mind, delivered the baby girl and put her up for adoption.

Her first child was raised by a grandmother, while her second was raised by the child's biological father with the understanding the child could have no contact from McCorvey.

McCorvey was converted to the other side of the issue in 1995 by protesters outside the Dallas women's clinic where she worked. After being baptized in a Dallas swimming pool, she because he activist working against abortion.
