Computer glitch cited in serial rape case

DENVER, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Denver police blame a computer glitch for the failure to identify a 35-year-old child rapist linked to three recent sexual assaults.

Police said a DNA sample might have identified the alleged serial rapist two months before the recent incidents, CNN said Tuesday. Police blamed the computer problem on an FBI contractor's transfer of data to a new server.

Police said they finally used DNA evidence from victims to link three sexual assaults earlier this month to Brent J. Brents. Authorities say Brents' DNA profile was already in a state database because of previous convictions for child molestation.

Brents was released from prison last year after serving more than 16 years for sexual assaults on two children in 1988.

He was captured Friday in Glenwood Springs, Colo., after a massive manhunt and was being jailed on $25 million bond.
