Hong Kong ferry collides with cargo ship

HONG KONG, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- In heavy fog, a ferry collided with a Chinese cargo ship in Hong Kong waters Thursday morning, injuring 97 people.

The high-speed catamaran ferry was heading from Hong Kong to the Chinese city of Nansha, carrying 156 passengers and nine crew members, when it slammed into the cargo vessel, the South China Morning Post reported.

Marine police launches and fire service boats rushed to the scene to rescue the injured. The catamaran was seriously damaged, but was able to return to the Hong Kong-China Ferry terminal.

Four passengers suffered serious bone fractures and head injuries and were rushed to hospitals. Another 93 were treated for lesser injuries; 77 had left the hospitals by afternoon.

In a separate incident, a ferry collided with a cargo vessel in waters near the eastern side of Hong Kong Island, causing two people to fall overboard. They were rescued unharmed.

Visibility in the harbor was less than two nautical miles, weather reports said.
