Swiss hostage-taking ends peacefully

BERN, Switzerland, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A hostage-taking incident at the Spanish Consulate in Bern, Switzerland, ended peacefully early Monday with no injuries, the BBC reported.

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said three intruders who had entered the consulate had left and the Spanish staff was unharmed. No other details were released.

There were initially varying reports of one, two or three people entering the consulate and beating a security guard around 8 a.m., CNN said.

It was not immediately clear whether the intruders were armed or what their demands were.

An aide to Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said it did not appear to be a case of Islamic terrorism.

About 12 people typically work in the consulate -- about eight or nine Spaniards and a couple of Swiss nationals, a Spanish Embassy official said.
