HOUSTON, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The parents of a 6-month-old baby who is fighting for her life in a Houston hospital following alleged abuse have been arrested.
Police said the baby, in Texas Children's Hospital's intensive care unit, is covered from "head to toe" with brutal injuries and she was penetrated or raped vaginally and anally, reported the Houston Chronicle Saturday.
The baby's tongue was cut so severely it was nearly severed and the infant also has suffered skull fractures, brain contusions and hemorrhaging and injuries to her liver, lungs and kidneys, said Houston Police Department Sgt. Randy Upton. "In this case, the trauma was nearly head to toe," he said.
Ivan Castaneda and Donna Marie Norman are being held without bond. If the child dies, the parents may be charged with murder, according to prosecutors.
The baby's parents brought her to Doctor's Parkway Hospital for treatment of what they described as "congestion" problems.
