Colombia busts drug dog official

BOGOTA, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Colombian authorities arrested the head of the canine drug unit for Bogota's International airport in connection with drug smuggling, El Tiempo reported Friday.

According to police Freddy Castro was allegedly paid off by a smuggling ring to alert traffickers when his dogs would not be on duty.

Castro's arrest was part of large-scale police sting going after members of the trafficking ring once headed by retired police Col. Lionel Mendoza, who was arrested in December.

Colombia is the world's largest producer of cocaine.
