Libya urges North Korea to give up nukes

SEOUL, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi reportedly has urged North Korea to follow in Libya's footsteps and give up its nuclear ambitions.

Gadhafi also advised Iran to abandon its nuclear drive in order to ease tensions in the international community, South Korean officials reported Wednesday, after Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon's visit to Libya.

"The North Korean nuclear problem is a serious and dangerous issue," Gadhafi reportedly told Ban during their meeting in Tripoli.

"At the meeting, Gadhafi said North Korea and Iran should take the same measures his nation took," a ministry official said.

The Libyan leader also urged the international community to take steps to reward North Korea and Iran if they disarm, the official said.

Libya agreed in December 2003 to dismantle its nuclear programs and renounce the pursuit of atomic weapons. In return, Washington has lifted most sanctions against Libya.
