MIAMI, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- The founders of the Cali drug cartel are seeking a plea bargain with U.S. prosecutors, a Colombian magazine has reported.
Semana magazine said during the weekend that Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela and his brother, Miguel, are offering to plead guilty if U.S. officials leave their relatives alone.
Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela has been brought to Miami for prosecution and Miguel is in Colombia awaiting extradition.
The pair said that besides pleading guilty and accepting the equivalent of a life sentence in prison, they will provide information about unsolved murders in Colombia and about corrupt judges and other officials.
The Miami Herald reported that the magazine cited a five-page letter sent by an attorney for Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela to U.S. Attorney Marcos Jimenez in Miami, who is directing the prosecution of the case.
The brothers are accused of supplying 80 percent of the cocaine sold in the United States during the 1990s.
