WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- The American Civil Liberties Union said Tuesday new documents show an FBI investigation into "aggressive" detainee interrogations was scaled back.
In addition, records relating to the FBI's investigation of the techniques at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, are still being withheld, the ACLU said.
Of the 26 FBI reports of prisoner mistreatment, only nine were followed up by the FBI, the ACLU said the documents showed.
The documents were released under a court order directing the Defense Department and other government agencies to comply with a year-old request under the Freedom of Information Act filed by the ACLU and other organizations.
Many of the documents show FBI concern at how Defense Department employees were interrogating terror suspect detainees.
The latest documents were released on the eve of the confirmation hearings of White House counsel Alberto Gonzales, who has been nominated as attorney general. The ACLU said Gonzales approved a memo that provided legal justification for the use of torture and described the Geneva Conventions as "quaint" and "obsolete."
