Chicago fire probe results contradictory

By ALEX CUKAN, United Press International

CHICAGO, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Chicago police's final report on last year's fire at the Cook County Administration Building contradicts Fire Department investigators, officials said.

The Fire Department's investigation concluded that the fire was started by one person, while police officials said federal investigators determined there is no evidence of arson.

The police report, to be released within days, is expected to include a report from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that contradicts findings from the Chicago Fire Department and the Illinois crime lab, sources told the Chicago Tribune Saturday.

The office of fire investigation had concluded that the Oct. 17, 2003, fire that resulted in six deaths, was "incendiary" because one sample tested positive for gasoline.

However, sources said federal investigators have determined there was no evidence of arson.
