Ugandan rebels massacre seven in Sudan

KAMPALA, Uganda, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- A Ugandan rebel group hacked to death three women and four children in a southern Sudan village, the BBC reported.

About 30 machete-wielding fighters of the Lord's Resistance Army Friday attacked the small village of Rejaf, on the banks of the White Nile. Details emerged from fleeing villagers several days later.

"Our workers were told the rebels came at midnight on Friday and cut to pieces the seven people with machetes," said local Rev. Paul Yugusuk.

The latest attack comes despite a ceasefire called by Ugandan authorities and the rebels last month. But communication between LRA leaders and the rank and file has proved difficult, as they are scattered across northern Uganda and southern Sudan.

"The LRA are becoming very dangerous now for our people, because they are operating in small groups and you never know where they will attack," said Yugusuk.

The conflict in northern Uganda has driven 1.6 million people into refugee camps and triggered what aid workers call one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters.

Little is known about the motives of the LRA, led by self-proclaimed mystic Joseph Kony, whose insurgency has been marked by the massacre of civilians and the abduction of tens of thousands of children.
