Two more Russian nuclear sites secured

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- The United States announced Friday it had completed security upgrades at two more Russian nuclear facilities.

The National Nuclear Security Administration said this week's completion of the projects at two reactor-fuel enrichment plants in Zelenogorsk and Novouralsk brought the percentage of Russian facilities upgraded to 70 percent.

The projects were aimed at preventing nuclear materials from falling into the hands of terrorists or the black market. The upgrades involved better alarms and stronger storage facilities as well as inventory control systems.

The NNSA has been at the job for 10 years and expects to have its work completed in 2008.
