Jeb Bush wants repeal of class-size limits

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says he is renewing efforts to repeal a plan approved by the voters to reduce the size of classes in the state's schools.

The constitutional amendment passed in 2002 would limit class sizes to no more than 18 students for kindergarten through the third grade, 23 through the eight grade and 25 for high school classes.

The limits would go into effect in 2010 and a vote to repeal them is unlikely before 2006, the St. Petersburg Times reported Wednesday.

"I hope class size is repealed," Bush said Tuesday. "Nothing has changed in terms of the significant impact on school life to implement this provision."

He said he could ask the Legislature to put it on the ballot or launch a petition campaign among voters. He could also do both.

He said he would make that decision after the New Year.

Rep. Kendrick Meek, D-Fla., who pushed the measure when he was a member of the state Legislature, said he doesn't think Bush can get it done.
