American pulls pillows to save money

FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- American Airlines has removed pillows from its fleet of MD-80 airliners to cut costs.

The move will enable workers to clean cabins faster, said American spokesman Tim Wagner in Wednesday's Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The 334 planes are used on shorter flights.

"It will streamline our cabin service," he said.

American, like many other airlines, is taking measures to cut costs. This suggestion came from a strategy session with employees earlier this year.

The savings from the removal of the pillows from MD-80s is in the "mid-six figures" annually, Wagner said.

Cabins should be cleaner because workers won't spend time collecting pillows after every flight. Most passengers should be able to use adjustable headrests to get comfortable, Wagner said.

American doesn't plan to remove pillows from other aircraft. The MD-80s are assigned to its hubs at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and O'Hare Airport in Chicago.
