Bush praises American people

MANCHESTER, N.H., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- President Bush in New Hampshire Friday ditched attacks on Sen. John Kerry and instead turned reflective on America and leadership.

"I have met exceptional men and women during my time as your president," he said at a rally in Manchester. "I have seen their strength and sacrifice, and their examples have confirmed there is no limit to the greatness of America."

Bush, always relentless in portraying Kerry as unfit to serve as president in time of war, spoke Friday of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the courage of ordinary Americans that day. Al-Qaida killed thousands, he said, but "they did not take away our spirit, our hope for the promise of tomorrow ... there is hope beyond the ashes of September the 11th and nobody can take that away from us."

Bush said America was winning the war on terrorism and spreading democracy. He also stressed the need for firm leadership, a president who makes the country's priorities "absolutely clear" and who is consistent.

Joining Bush on stage in Manchester were family members of some of the victims of Sept. 11.
