Iraqi husband admits to murder plot

OSLO, Norway, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- A man with both Iraqi and Norwegian citizenship faces murder charges in Norway after admitting to a plot to kill his Norwegian wife in Iraq.

Osman Omar Osman was charged after he told authorities he hired two gunmen to kill his 38-year-old wife Marita Strøm in northern Iraq last month, Aftenposten reported Thursday.

Osman told police he arranged the killing to benefit from his wife's life insurance policy in Norway. Gunmen shot and killed her Sept. 3 as she returned home with her husband and their 5-year-old daughter after having dinner at a friend's house in Sulaimaniyah.

Sarkawt Hassan Jallal, head of security forces in Sulaimaniyah in North-Iraq, told Aftenposten the arrest of Aras Ibrahim Hassan, 36, a friend of Osman, was the breakthrough in the case.

Jallal said Hassan was the driver while a mutual friend, Kamel Bata, 28, was hired to do the shooting. Jallal said Hassan and Bata confessed.
