WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The Federal Trade Commission said Wednesday five of 17 funeral homes it checked in New York and Massachusetts were in violation of federal rules.
FTC staff conducted sweeps in Rockland County, N.Y., and Cambridge, Mass. The action was part of a continuing nationwide law enforcement program.
The agency checked the homes for compliance of requirements, including giving consumers a copy of an itemized general price list and whether those lists for caskets and outer burial containers were given in a timely manner.
The funeral homes found to be in violation will be asked to participate in the Funeral Rule Offenders Program in lieu of possible formal legal action, which could result in an injunction and civil penalties.
