Oregon hay fire to burn for days

SALEM, Ore., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A massive hay fire in Oregon was expected to burn itself out over the next few days.

Fire officials in Salem said the fire that broke out overnight consumed more than 300 tons of hay by daybreak Thursday and was too large to be snuffed by firefighters.

The fire was burning at a company that produces compressed hay balls for export to Japan. The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

KATU-TV, Portland, said a smoke column reaching 10,000 feet into the sky resulted in a flood of calls to 911 that threatened to overwhelm the system.
