Bail was set at 165,000 British pounds or almost $293,000 after Thatcher's arrest last week.

Seventy men have been convicted in Zimbabwe of involvement in the alleged attempt to overthrow the government of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea and are awaiting sentencing. Another 15 are on trial in Guinea.

Thatcher has a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 25. He could be charged under South African laws banning mercenary military activities.

Thatcher's wife, Diane, a U.S. citizen, and their children have left South Africa.
