Yemen sentences suspect to death

SANAA, Yemen, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A Yemeni court Saturday sentenced one man to death and 14 others to prison terms ranging from three to ten years on terrorism charges.

The special court, hearing terrorism cases, convicted the suspects of carrying out an attack against a French ship two years ago, attempting to attack the U.S. ambassador in Yemen, plotting to strike five Western embassies and government institutions, as well as destabilizing the security of the country.

Most of the defense lawyers boycotted the hearings, which started last May, to protest against the jurisdiction of the court.

After hearing the verdict, the defendants shouted "Allah akbar" (God is great) and "No God but Allah and America is the enemy of God. No God but Allah and bin Laden is the beloved of God," in reference to al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

Two lawyers representing three defendants said they would appeal the verdict in a higher court.
