Yemen court sentences terror suspects

SANAA, Yemen, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A Yemen court has sentenced 15 men on terror charges, including the bombing of a French oil tanker and a plan to kill the U.S. ambassador to Yemen.

The Yemeni court sentenced one man to death for fatally shooting a Yemeni policeman at a checkpoint in 2002; the rest of the suspects received prison terms as long as 10 years.

The French tanker was badly damaged in an October 2002 attack, blamed on al-Qaida, the BBC reported Saturday.

Defense lawyers boycotted Friday's sentencing proceedings, which they said were unfair.

"These are illegal sentences because the lawyers were not given the chance to defend them," said the father of one of the defendants.
