WASHINGTON, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Real median U.S. household income remained unchanged at $43,318 between 2002 and 2003, reported the U.S. Census Bureau.
Real median income remained the same for non-Hispanic white households at about $48,000, black households at about $30,000 or Asian households at about $55,500.
During the same period, the nation's official poverty rate rose from 12.1 percent in 2002 to 12.5 percent in 2003, the census said in a report "Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2003."
The census also found the number of people with health insurance increased by 1 million to 243.3 million between 2002 and 2003, but the number without such coverage rose by 1.4 million to 45.0 million. The percentage of the nation's population without coverage health insurance grew from 15.2 percent in 2002 to 15.6 percent in 2003.
