Bird flu fears cut Singapore chicken sales

SINGAPORE, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Fears of bird flu plus high prices have combined to cut Singapore's poultry sales by as much as 70 percent, the Straits Times reported Saturday.

Some customers were put off by the higher price of chicken and eggs, while a few were wary of eating chicken because of a bird flu scare, although chicken sold in Singapore is reportedly safe,, the newspaper said.

The city-state's Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority and two ministers from its National Development Ministry said Singapore will take all measures necessary to ensure the integrity of its food safety system is maintained.
