Postmaster admits to $900,000 theft

SEVENOAKS, England, July 20 (UPI) -- A British postmaster has admitted to stealing more than $900,000 of Royal Mail money to support his gambling addiction, The Times of London said Tuesday.

For more than two years, Dean Williams, 34, said he helped himself to the cash from a Royal Mail safe while working as assistant manager in Kent, England.

Williams, who had an annual salary of $75,000, told a magistrate he had "borrowed" the money to place bets on horse races and had intended to pay it back when he got a big win.

The court was also told he never took a holiday during the 26 months he was raiding the safe. Instead he ensured he was at work when other staff carried out a routine check of the safe.

An audit by the Royal Mail found the total sum stolen was $957,936.84.

Williams was granted bail and his case was sent to the Crown Court. Williams will be sentenced at a later date, and could face as much as nine years in jail.
