Bird flu spreading in Thailand

BANGKOK, July 16 (UPI) -- The new outbreak of bird flu in Thailand is spreading, with suspected infections in eight districts in Bangkok, officials said.

According to local newspapers, the eight districts have been declared suspected bird-flu areas, and movement of poultry within them is banned. The livestock office has not yet released the results of tests for avian influenza in the districts.

A Bangkok deputy city clerk, Pitinant Natrujirot, said that the bird-flu situation was under control and should not be a cause for alarm.

Since July 3 the deadly bird flu virus has been found at several farms in seven northern and central provinces and more than 40,000 fowls in the areas were destroyed.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Wednesday denied a new bird flu epidemic had gripped the country despite outbreaks in at least eight provinces.
