Probe begins into Norway refinery fire

BERGEN, Norway, July 12 (UPI) -- Police and government agencies began investigating a refinery fire Monday near Bergen, Norway, that injured two people, Aftenposten reported.

Firefighters took two hours to contain the blaze at the Mongstad refinery as investigators from the country's Petroleumstilsynet, an oil regulatory agency were dispatched from Oslo.

Even before the fire was out, police were meeting with officials at the country's largest crude oil refinery.

The two injured workers were treated for first- and second-degree burns and released, the report said.

Production capacity at the plant, which is 79 percent owned by the national Statoil and 21 percent by Shell was cut to 90,000 barrels a day, from the normal 180,000.

Refinery spokesman Kare Ness said he didn't know how long Mongstad would be forced to operate at half its ordinary level, and said it was too early to assess damages.
