Woman survives hanging by church bell rope

EDINBURGH, Scotland, June 28 (UPI) -- A Scottish woman nearly lost her life after a rope hanging from a church's bell tower got caught around her and lifted her 10 feet into the air.

The 64-year-old woman, who was not identified, apparently mis-timed her catch on the rope and it wrapped around her neck and elbow, the Daily Record reported Monday.

The momentum of the swinging bells in St. Mary's Episcopalian Cathedral in Edinburgh yanked her up 10 feet and then slammed her to the floor before hoisting her up again, after which she hung by her neck.

Other bell ringers rushed to untangle her and call rescue workers. Worshipers, meanwhile, had no idea what was happening until they heard sirens.

Fire crews used an aerial platform outside the 125-year-old tower before lowering the woman on a stretcher and taking her to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Her condition was not disclosed.
