U.S. opens liaison office in Libya

WASHINGTON, June 28 (UPI) -- The United States opened a liaison office Monday in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, the State Department announced.

Since there's no consular officer among the staff, the office will provide only limited services to U.S. citizens, the department said.

The United States lifted restrictions on the use of American passports for travel to Libya in February 2004 after Libya opened its nuclear facilities to international inspection and took steps to cooperate with the United States in the global war on terrorism.

On Sept. 12 last year, the United Nations also lifted its sanctions on Libya and the U.S. government modified sanctions to permit most financial and commercial transactions. But the State Department warned technologies and goods on the Department of Commerce Export Control List must be licensed by the Department of Commerce for export to Libya.

The U.S. Treasury's Office also allows transactions for travel to and from and within Libya. U.S. citizens are also allowed to have temporary residence in Libya.
