Pakistan, India to release prisoners

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 24 (UPI) -- India and Pakistan have agreed to speed up exchange of prisoners, Pakistani newspapers reported Thursday.

The reports, quoting official sources in Islamabad, said the decision to expedite prisoners' exchange was taken at a meeting last week between the border security officials of the two countries in Pakistan last week.

At the meeting, two sides also decided to release those who have already completed their terms of imprisonment but could not be released because of tensions between India and Pakistan.

The reports said currently India is holding 800 Pakistani prisoners, 90 for crossing the border by mistake. The rest were involved in various crimes such as smuggling.

There are about 150 Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails.
