The culprit approached the victim from behind, attempting to take away his paper bag. In the ensuing scuffle the attacker shot him and fled the scene with the bag, running into the crowd of commuters. No one else was hurt.

Police said Nishioka had finished work and was heading to a changing room in the station when the incident occurred, reported the Mainichi Shimbun. Shootings are rare in Japan, and the incident shocked commuters and station employees.
