U.S., IAEA urge Iran to cooperate on nukes

WASHINGTON, June 21 (UPI) -- Iran must respond to the demands of the U.N. nuclear watchdog to show it is not developing nuclear weapons, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Monday.

"We hope that in the weeks and months ahead Iranians will satisfy all the concerns that members of the international community still have," he said after a meeting with Mohammed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

Last week, the IAEA board of governors passed a resolution condemning Iran's cooperation with the agency and urged a quick end to the investigation into Tehran's nuclear program.

"We need to bring this issue to a close as soon as we can," ElBaradei said Monday.

Powell said Iran's response will be examined in September.

"At that time judgments can be made as to what action might be appropriate," he said.

Washington says Iran is making nuclear weapons. Tehran insists its program is for peaceful purposes only.
