Iraq finalizing emergency draft law

BAGHDAD, June 19 (UPI) -- Iraqi government officials Saturday were putting the final touches on an emergency draft law expected to be enacted next month.

An Iraqi official said on condition of anonymity the draft emergency and national safety law was being written by Iraqi legal experts and would be submitted for endorsement to the National Iraqi Council when it is formed next month .

The official said the emergency law was needed "in such extraordinary circumstances where quick and firm measures must be taken to confront the terrorists and conspirators with an iron fist."

The new law, he said, will give a wide range of authority to the prime minister.

Iraqi Justice Minister Malik Dohan al-Hassan said the government was considering imposing martial law to face the deteriorating security conditions in the country.
