German extremist cleric missing

COLOGNE, Germany, May 27 (UPI) -- German police launched a manhunt for extremist cleric Metin Kaplan after a court authorized his arrest for terrorist plotting.

Kaplan, known as the Caliph of Cologne, is wanted in Turkey for conspiring to blow up a memorial to the country's founder with an explosives-laden airplane and has now gone missing, German newspaper Die Welt reports.

German authorities had been forbidden by a lower court from arresting and extraditing Kaplan.

The Muenster appeals court reversed the ruling Wednesday, but police were unable to locate Kaplan.

Kaplan's disappearance has sparked outcries from German politicians and a manhunt across Europe.
