Australian leaders oppose samesex proposal

CANBERRA, Australia, May 27 (UPI) -- Australia's Labor government has voiced opposition to a move to prevent gays from marrying or adopting children from overseas.

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said proposals to prevent gay people from marrying or adopting children from overseas were unnecessary and divisive, the Advertiser reported.

Gay adoption was recently legalized and a law passed protecting gay rights.
