Martin says no new taxes for health plan

TORONTO, May 25 (UPI) -- Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin has promised not to raise taxes to pay for his new multibillion dollar healthcare program.

Martin planned to go over the aspects of the ambitious plan on Tuesday. Grilled by reporters beforehand, he would not commit against a health premium but pledged not to boost taxes for the mass injection of money into Canada's ailing healthcare system.

A senior government official told the Toronto Sun the Liberal government would pay for the plan without a tax hike and without dipping into the $3 billion rainy day fund.

Under their 10 year plan, the Liberals would spend billions to create a national homecare program, reduce waiting times, train new doctors and regularly make new cash injections.

Martin is expected to call for increased federal-provincial cooperation in a national effort to revitalize healthcare.
