N.Korea's Kim visits near train blast site

SEOUL, May 18 (UPI) -- North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has made an inspection tour of a border city near the town devastated by a train blast last month, Pyongyang's news media said.

The North's sate-run Central News Agency said Kim gave "field-guidance" to the Rakwon Machine Complex in the northwestern city of Sinuiju, bordering China. "Kim Jong Il watched various types of new machines manufactured at the complex," said the agency monitored in Seoul Tuesday.

"He underscored the need for the complex to keep concentrating its efforts on the technical modernization based on the latest technology," the KCNA said.

The agency did not say when Kim visited the city, but Sinuiju is near where a huge explosion occurred at the Ryongchon train station on April 22. Many of the injured are being treated at hospitals in the city.

Sinuiju is the North's major industrial city designated as a special economic zone. Kim traveled to the city in 2000 and again in 2002.
