Politics blunt Mexico energy reforms

LA JOLLA, Calif., May 17 (UPI) -- Mexican Energy Secretary Felipe Calderon said reforms to Mexico's energy sector will have to wait until after the 2006 presidential election.

Calderon Monday told reporters at an energy conference opposition continues in the Mexican congress to a liberalization of the nation's electricity sector despite new polls he said indicate building public support for the reforms.

Reforms in the power sector and other parts of the energy industry are considered crucial to attracting needed foreign investment in the state oil company Pemex and other state-run companies.

Calderon said a number of international companies decided not to bid on service contracts in eastern Mexico's Burgos Basin gas fields, which to him proved the Fox administration was not giving away too much to foreign firms.
